Top 20 Social Bookmark Sites for 2010

Social bookmarking sites allow users to post their favorite websites, using tags (or keywords) to categorise and organise them. Then other users can copy these bookmarks and add them to their own collection and share them with even more users.

There is no other low-cost promotional method that will easily give you large numbers of visitors to your website. If you are selling products/services or just publishing content for ad revenue, social media marketing is a potent method that will make your site profitable over time

Here are some of our favorite social bookmarking sites that we use on a regular basis.

  1. digg.com: is a website made for people to discover and share content from anywhere on the Internet, by submitting links and stories, and voting and commenting on submitted links and stories, in a social and democratic spirit. Voting stories up and down is the site's cornerstone function, respectively called digging and burying. Many stories get submitted every day, but only the most dugg stories appear on the front page.

  2. technorati.com: is an Internet search engine for searching blogs, competing with Google and Yahoo. As of June 2010, Technorati indexes 112.8 million blogs and over 250 million pieces of tagged social media. The name Technorati is a portmanteau, pointing to the technological version of literati or intellectuals.

  3. del.icio.us.com: is a social bookmarking web service for storing, sharing, and discovering web bookmarks. The site was founded by Joshua Schachter in late 2003 and acquired by Yahoo! in 2005. It has more than five million users and 150 million bookmarked URLs.

  4. propeller.com: previously known as Netscape.com, is a social news aggregator operated by AOL-Netscape. It is similar to Digg; users can vote for which stories are to be included on the front page and may comment on them as well.

  5. stumbleupon.com: is owned by eBay, an internet community that allows its users to discover and rate Web pages, photos, and videos. It is a recommendation system which uses peer and social-networking principles.

  6. reddit.com: Reddit (also reddit) is a social news website on which users can post links to content on the web. Other users may then vote the posted links up or down, causing them to appear more or less prominently on the Reddit home page.

  7. fark.com: is a community website that allows users to comment on a daily batch of news articles and other items from various websites. It is one of the top 100 English language websites, receiving over 2,500 submissions a day and over 5 million unique visitors per month. It is frequently used as a humorous source on CNN, Fox News, The Daily Show, The Colbert Report, and many radio stations. It is generally seen as the destination for strange news stories and snarky commentary.

  8. Flickr is a social bookmarking and social networking site with a twist: it's all about photos. Users can upload and tag their favorite photos, then other users can bookmark those photos as favorites and share them with even more people. You can also comment on individual photos and share why you like (or dislike) that image.

  9. slashdot.org: often abbreviated as /., is a technology-related news website owned by SourceForge, Inc. It features user-submitted and editor-evaluated current affairs news with a "nerdy" slant. Each story on the site has an Internet forum-style comments section attached. The name "Slashdot" is described by the site's owners as "a sort of obnoxious parody of a URL", chosen to confuse those who tried to pronounce the URL of the site ("h-t-t-p-colon-slash-slash-slashdot-dot-org")

  10. kaboodle.com: is a social shopping website where people discover, recommend and share products. Kaboodle's shopping tools allow people to organize their shopping through lists, discover new things from people with similar style, get discounts on popular products and find best prices. Kaboodle was launched in 2005 and has 400,000 registered users and over 4 million monthly visitors.

  11. bloglines.com: is a web-based news aggregator for reading syndicated feeds using the RSS and Atom formats. Mark Fletcher, former CEO of ONElist, founded the site in 2003 and sold it in February 2005 to Ask.com.

  12. newsvine.com: is a community-powered news website which draws original content from its users and syndicated content from mainstream sources such as The Associated Press. Users can write articles, seed links to external content, and discuss news items submitted by both users and professional journalists.

  13. blinklist.com: make lists which you can share with others or keep them private. Save websites for reference, research, or for fun! Read those sites later! When you have the time. Have them appear in your links on your blog instantly.

  14. netvous.com: is a social bookmarking service that allows you to save your favorite links online and access them from any computer, wherever you are. Organize your bookmarks in folders and tag each bookmark with keywords. Access them quickly on your own personalized bookmarks page.

Think of your Guides as a team of web editors you choose to consistently deliver you clips of things they find on the web.
